Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible
James D. G. Dunn
John W. Rogerson

The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible (ECB) is a comprehensive, single-volume guide to the entire Bible, including the Apocrypha and even 1 Enoch. Written in accessible language by sixty-seven leading scholars, it summarizes modern scholarship for scholars, students, pastors, and general readers.
Instead of a verse-by-verse approach, the ECB focuses on larger sections—narratives, parables, prophetic oracles, and arguments—highlighting their meaning and how they connect to the broader biblical story. Each book includes a concise summary and commentary, while thirteen introductory essays provide historical and theological context.
The contributors bring a wide range of perspectives, offering fresh interpretations, raising new questions, and sometimes providing their own translations from the original Hebrew or Greek, even though the New Revised Standard Version is the primary text.
The ECB also addresses major interpretive issues, directs readers to further resources through excellent bibliographies and an extensive subject index, and treats the Bible both as a historical document and as sacred scripture.
